I'm a third-year history major, and a volunteer a day or half a day a week (depending on work/study committments) at a local folk museum here in Hobart, Australia. It's wonderful for me because I love geeking out over old books, clothes, needlework and other ephemera, and I'm gaining valuable experience in my chosen field. My boss is incredibly encouraging (he was in my place not too many years ago) and I have the freedom to use the museum's objects and resources to conduct my own research if I decide to do an Honours year.

It can be a terrific form of socializing & meeting people that share your interests, ethics, and values.
Heck ... I'd much rather get to know someone while helping others than @ a smoky bar or overpriced restaurant or even worse - shopping!
I have volunteered for 35 years in different capacities.
When my sons were young - at their school.
Always @ my church.
And for the causes I've believed in ...
That ranges from counseling young mothers, to working on political campaigns.
Volunteering is a frugal way to add depth & meaning to our lives!!!

What makes the school so great is the army of parents who are there every day. I'm really not a private school person, but I do feel that my time is an investment in (free) public education, both for our family and for other families who couldn't afford private school even if they wanted to attend one.

Volunteering is frugal for me too, it certainly allows me to socialize and have fun without spending!
