I was searching for a way to fancy up dinner the other day, and ended up with the delicious, and easy, dish. I served it over rice, with a side of green beans, for that classic 1950’s americana presentation!
To start, I put 5 hamburger patties in a frying pan (one for each member of the family) and fried them until they were cooked on the outside, but not the inside. Then I removed them from the pan, and put them aside (out of the cats’ reach) until later in the recipe.
While the patties were cooking, I sliced two onions into thin half circles. After taking the hamburgers out of the pan I dumped the onions in, and sauteed them in the drippings until translucent. Then I stirred in about two heaping tablespoons of flour, taking care to avoid lumps and then, still over high heat, I added about two cups of milk and stirred away. After the sauce started bubbling I turned the heat off and added the patties. It only took a few more minutes of cooking time, and boy, were they delicious!

Something I know our family would enjoy. I’ve done something very similar, basically making sausage gravy with ground beef instead and serving it over noodles, biscuits or rice. A comfort food at our house during the cold weather. My mom used to do a version of this with ground beef patties; I think she called it poor man’s stroganoff or something like that. She got her recipe from my dad’s mom in the 40’s.
Have you ever made homemade rice-a-roni and then added cooked ground beef to it? Same idea and delish.

we call this "hamburg steak" at our house and it is loved by all. I do it without milk, though, since my little one only drinks soy. I feel like I haven't been here in ages! I love the new format. No more frugal fridays?

I like this with mashed potatoes. It's a favorite from my childhood. Put hamburger patty on plate, top with mashed potatoes and top that with the onion gravy. And, yes, serve with green beans. I guess it's almost a quick version of meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans.
I JUST made a hamburger gravy sort of dish last nite. Brown hamburger/
add onions to it along with chunks of potatoes..smaller for quicker dinner/add water so potatoes will cook and make a gravy of sorts/salt-pepper and put a lid on until potatoes are done. The water will make the potatoes mushy and its like a gravy.. add a little corn to the pan and you have a great comfort meal.
