It's creepy how similar to your friend I am, and how we have the same problems for the same reasons. I'm a hardcore planner, and I used to be too frugal. Now that I've had a comfortable income for a couple of years I've become less obsessive, and I live a little more freely while retaining the lessons learned during years of uber-frugality (aka being broke). I'm glad you don't think one is better than the other, though I want to point out that planners can be "doers", too!
