Weekly Round-Up: Rotten Thieves

by Kelly on December 6, 2009

in Links Galore

Those of you who follow me on Facebook might have seen me post this message yesterday afternoon.

House burgled. Laptops stolen. Cats traumatized. Kids asleep. Ugh.

It happened sometime between 5 and 10 pm last night, while we were holiday shopping and out to dinner. They pried open the iron shutters for the kitchen door, smashed the glass to get in. They started really searching in our room, but it seems like they were surprised because the only things they took were our two laptops and my cell phone. There were a lot more valuable things, emotionally and monetarily, they could have taken, like my husband’s guitars, my family jewelry, this old computer I’m currently typing on… which luckily they didn’t.

Unfortunately it also means that more than a year’s worth of work is also missing.

My husband’s really the one who’s suffering, as his work computer was stolen. He’s going to have a lot of work getting things back up to speed. But my entire graduate school work is also gone, including the thesis I was busy procrastinating working on.

Rotten thieves.

I’m thankful that things weren’t worse. The kids were worried, but went to bed right after we got home and even slept through the visit from the police. The cats seem slightly traumatized still, but are OK.

Still. Rotten thieves.

Oh Kelly, I am so sorry especially after you so recently moved in. It is good that they only took electronics. You probably don’t want to hear this now but I have an external hard drive that I have hidden. The problem is you have to remember to back it up.

I hope they catch those horrible thieves.

Back-up! Back-up! Back-up! We all get lazy about this, but it’s definitely something to remember. Unfortunately, there ARE rotten thieves in the world, and hard disks do crash, as mine did several months ago. I’ve been especially careful about backing up regularly since the crash, but I know I’ll become lazier eventually, too. So, remind me, too, from time to time, will you?

Kelly! I’m so sorry to hear about this. I hope you’re able to recover quickly, and that it doesn’t cast a shadow over your holidays.

So sorry to hear this but so glad you weren’t home when it happened or that no one was hurt. Mean people suck. Glad you’re ok.

I am so sorry to hear this. This is really inconvenient, especially during the holidays. I am glad that everyone is ok.

In addition to backing up work on your computer, might I suggest Google Documents. It functions just like Microsoft Office and automatically backs up your work every few minutes. So if your computer crashes or gets stolen, you can just retrieve your work from another computer.

I’m so sorry this happened to your family. It sounds like maybe they were watching your house. I hope they catch those low-life thieves. I love my cats but we have a dog that barks, too. I hope he adds an extra layer of protection to our home.

Oh my. So sorry to hear that. Being burgled is horrible.

Did you have copies of the work anywhere? Had you emailed it to anyone?

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. Being burgled is so FRUSTRATING. YOU did the work to earn those things and the work on those laptops, not the burglars!

I get very angry when people steal things. I’m sorry you have to go through this, but I’m glad the kids and cats seem to be ok.

Damn thieves!

Glad you are all ok.

We were robbed a month after moving into our new house. $28,000 worth of memories & stuff. Damn robbers.

We had an alarm system put in afterwards. Don’t want to worry you, but sometimes they do a second visit after you have claimed and purchased your new items.

Sad for you.

Ugh that’s awful, I’m so sorry. I’m glad nothing else went missing, though, and that everyone is safe.

Oh Kelly,
I am so very sorry about the break in. Just catching up with the bad news. Hope all is back in order at the house now to help obliterate the memory. Loss of the computers is awful, but it could have been worse. I am glad you didn’t walk in on them.

I am so sorry to hear that! I can’t imagine how you feel. Once I came home to an open door and the police because the alarm went off. Thank god it was just me who forgot to lock the door but I was freaked out. The first thing I went looking for was my laptop because of all my kids pictures on it!
Bon courage!
