@Jerry – Costa Rica has some accredited medicare hospitals but not all medical insurance plans will be available locally. It definitely makes sense to do some research. Some expats take out special overseas health insurnace policies. You’ll find standard surgeries and medical procedures are priced well below US costs. But often only available in hospitals located in capital cities.

Do you have to pay for medical insurance or is it universal? I envy people who can just pick up and do that. I read “4 Hour Work Week” and it may lead me to take off and live someplace exotic someday, too.

Her Nicaragua budget is about the same as my Kansas City budget except I didn’t have a maid. I’m guessing her apartment is a lot nicer than mine was.
